ODF files, along with a good representation of its formatting can be imported into FM 7 or 8. However, an ODF file must first be converted to a file format that FrameMaker will work with. Therefore, if the ODF file can be first converted accurately into an MS DOC file, importing the converted ODF file to FrameMaker is fairly simple.

Procedure:
(1) In OOo Writer, convert the ODF file to DOC: File > Save As ... using the Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP (.doc) file format.

(2) (This step may be skipped if you feel certain that Writer faithfully converts your ODF formatting to DOC. Not everything converts as it should...) With MS Word, check the formatting in detail, so that you are comfortable with the conversion. If there are some problems, either (a) live with them or (b) change them either in Writer or Word to some other formatting that suits you.

(3) Assuming FM 8: Import the converted ODF file in FrameMaker--File > Open, browse to and select the DOC file, and enter Open (or double click). In the Unknown File Type dialog box, select either Microsoft Word or Microsoft Word 2007 and press Convert. The ODF file now has its counterpart in FrameMaker. The styles used in Writer (or MS Word) are now visible in a toolbar in FrameMaker.

In the event that you want your ODF document further converted into Structured FrameMaker, confer some instructions on doing that in another forum thread.
